This approach to health recognizes the patient as a whole person, not just a disease or a collection of symptoms. In the course of treatment, holistic medical practitioners address a client's emotional and spiritual dimensions as well as the nutritional, environmental and lifestyle factors that may contribute to an illness.

"To really improve adolescent health, programs should seek to reduce risk taking, improve social capital and improve levels of affluence," a study co-author said, although he acknowledged that this is a tall order.
